When measuring a handrail, it is critical that measurements are taken accurately. The following steps will assist you when measuring on an escalator.
Measuring Instructions
Place your start mark on the incline of the handrail. On an up unit, the starting mark will be at the top (A) and the measurements will be down the incline. For down units, the starting mark will be at the bottom measuring up the incline.
Place your next mark at the other end of the incline (B) and measure the distance between the two marks.
Once you have recorded your first measurement, rotate the escalator so as to take another measurement down (or up) the incline.
Repeat Step 3 (usually 3 times) until the start mark reappears.
Measure the distance between your last mark and the start mark (D & A ) and add to your other measurements (1, 2, & 3) to obtain the total handrail length.
For best results
Only measure handrail along the flat or incline of the unit. Do not measure around either the top or bottom curves.
To make the measurement mark on the handrail, place a piece of light colored secure tape (masking tape advised) across the handrail face. Using a pen or pencil, mark the precise measurement line on the tape. Do not use tape alone as the measurement mark, as your measurement will not be correct. Remove the tape from the handrail when finished.
Attempt to make your measurements (1, 2, & 3) all the same length to avoid miscalculations, e.g. 30 + 30 + 30.
Before ordering the replacement handrail, inspect the take-up mechanism to ensure proper adjustment is available in both directions for the new handrail.
